A worked decision guide for employed hairdressers considering self-employment before parental leave, using the 2026 payment rate, work rules and ongoing business costs.
Abby's take
What this means for the industry — and for independents
Industry impact. Hair income is tied closely to the person performing the service. Unlike a business with passive sales or a large team, a solo operator can lose revenue immediately while rent, software, insurance and client communication continue.
For freelancers. Moving too early can replace employer-supported leave with a government payment at the minimum-wage rate and a new set of fixed business costs. Moving deliberately can preserve eligibility, cash and client trust without promising an unrealistic return date.
My take. I would compare the actual leave position before handing in notice, not assume independence and government Parental Leave Pay produce the same safety net. The business should be able to pause without forcing you back behind the chair before you are ready.
What I'd do next
- Ask the employer for the written leave, annual-leave and return-to-work position, then compare it with the government payment and the proposed resignation date.
- Confirm the Services Australia work and income tests using the expected birth or adoption date, including which self-employed hours count before leave.
- List every fixed cost that would continue without service revenue and negotiate pause, reduction or exit rights before signing a chair or studio commitment.
- Build a leave buffer from the weekly income gap, fixed business costs and a slower-than-planned return, then obtain tax and financial advice for the household.
Watch-out. Eligibility, payment days, sharing rules, income tests and work restrictions depend on personal circumstances and can change. This is general information, not financial, tax, employment or social-security advice. Confirm the current rules with Services Australia and qualified advisers.
Twenty-six weeks is a family payment pool, not your old salary
For a child born or adopted from 1 July 2026, Services Australia says a family may receive up to 130 Parental Leave Pay days, described as 26 weeks based on a five-day week. Sharing and individual limits depend on the family’s circumstances.
The current rate is $200.94 a day before tax, or $1,004.70 for five days. The payment is taxable and is based on the national minimum wage. Compare that amount with your own gross employment income and employer-funded benefits rather than reading '26 weeks' as 26 weeks of ordinary wages.
Self-employment can count for the work test
Services Australia says self-employed work for financial reward or gain can count, even if the business does not make a profit. The general test requires work in 10 of the 13 months before the birth or adoption and at least 330 hours in those 10 months, subject to rules and exceptions.
That does not mean the timing is irrelevant. A break between employment and opening, reduced hours during setup or an early stop because of health can affect the evidence. Keep rosters, invoices, calendars, accounts and advice supporting the hours claimed.
The payment day is also a no-work day
Services Australia says a self-employed person must not work on a day claimed for Parental Leave Pay. Actively running daily operations counts as work. Its guidance also limits occasional tasks to no more than one hour on a payment day, including accounts, repairs, replacement staff and basic client contact.
This is the operational trap for a solo stylist. An online diary, messages, stock order and client problem can follow you home. Decide who handles them, pause what cannot be delegated and choose payment days with the work rule in mind.
A worked twelve-week income-gap example
Assume an employed hairdresser currently earns $1,400 a week before tax and compares that with five Parental Leave Pay days at the current $1,004.70 rate. The simple weekly gap is $395.30; over 12 weeks it is $4,743.60 before tax differences, employer leave and household changes.
If going independent adds $350 a week of chair, software and insurance costs that cannot be paused, another $4,200 is exposed across the same 12 weeks. The combined hypothetical gap is $8,943.60. Those figures are not a forecast; replace them with actual pay, chosen payment days, fixed costs and leave entitlements.
- Current weekly gross pay in the example: $1,400.
- Five Parental Leave Pay days at the current rate: $1,004.70 before tax.
- Twelve-week income gap: $4,743.60 before tax and employer benefits.
- Twelve weeks of $350 fixed business costs: $4,200.
- Illustrative combined exposure: $8,943.60.
Compare the resignation date with the benefits you give up
Before resigning, confirm employer-paid parental leave if any, accrued annual leave, notice, flexibility, service-linked benefits and the realistic return options. Government Parental Leave Pay is separate from an employer’s own scheme and does not recreate every employment entitlement.
Then examine the proposed independent arrangement. A long notice period, non-refundable bond, minimum chair days or software contract can convert a flexible business idea into fixed leave-period debt.

Build the return around capacity, not pressure
Do not pre-sell a full first week back merely to fund the gap. Keep a client communication plan, conservative hours, time for breaks and room for changes. Decide how deposits, cancellations and waiting lists work before announcing a date.
A safer decision can be to delay the move, negotiate fewer fixed days, keep employment longer or secure a written pause in workspace costs. The right answer depends on health, care, household income and entitlements, but the comparison should happen before resignation removes options.

Price the leave before changing careers
Use actual income, government payment days and fixed business costs to find the buffer your household would need.

Common questions
Can a self-employed hairdresser get Parental Leave Pay?
Potentially. Services Australia says self-employed work for financial reward or gain can count toward the work test, even when the business does not make a profit. All other eligibility rules still apply.
Can I answer clients on a Parental Leave Pay day?
Services Australia says you must not work on a claimed day and limits occasional tasks to no more than one hour. Its examples include basic client contact. Check the current rule for the exact activity and schedule.
Is Parental Leave Pay the same as employer-paid parental leave?
No. It is a government payment with its own eligibility, rate and work rules. An employer may separately offer paid leave or other entitlements. Compare both before resigning.
