Should a Perth bridal makeup artist book a second artist? A profit test

By Abby Waller · Founder, The Beauty Basement · @abby.brand.official on Instagram

A second artist can make a large bridal morning possible, but the booking only grows profit when extra paid work covers the complete added cost and both artists can deliver on time.

An independent Perth bridal makeup artist's profit checklist for adding a second artist: service timing, extra paid faces, labour classification, travel and booking costs.

Abby's take

What this means for the industry — and for independents

Industry impact. Wedding parties have fixed preparation deadlines. Extra artist capacity may protect timing, but adding a person without a clear role can weaken service consistency and profitability.

For freelancers. A solo makeup artist may pay a second professional before receiving the final balance. Travel, products, cancellation and potential worker entitlements can consume a thin margin.

My take. Do not judge this decision from the total wedding quote. Model only the bookings made possible by the second artist and write down who carries each risk.

What I'd do next

  • Build a timed run sheet from the required ready-by moment, including client changes and a delay buffer.
  • Get the complete second-artist fee in writing and assess whether the person is legally an employee or independent contractor.
  • Calculate extra completed-service contribution after labour, travel, kit and payment costs before confirming the larger booking.

Watch-out. An invoice or ABN alone does not establish contractor status. Award, tax, superannuation and insurance obligations depend on the actual working arrangement.

Work backwards from the bride's ready-by time

Include photography, dressing and travel before the ceremony to establish when every face must be finished. Allow for service lengths, cleaning, kit setup and small delays.

Do not assume two artists double the output: space, lighting, a suitable second workstation and client arrival order may still limit how many people can be served.

Build the bridal client brief

Count only additional bookable faces

If one artist can finish the full party on time, another artist may only add cost. If the deadline is genuinely tight, identify the specific paid services the second professional makes possible.

Separate extra service revenue from the total wedding invoice. Contribution from additional paid faces, less their products and card costs, must cover the extra artist and related overheads.

Test the margin with illustrative figures

Example only: two extra faces at $170 each generate $340 of gross service revenue. If additional products and payment costs total $35 and the second artist charges $230 all in, extra contribution is $75 before other costs.

If added parking, setup or travel costs another $90, the incremental result is a $15 loss. Replace every illustrative amount with your own quotes and applicable GST treatment.

Check worker status and event responsibilities

Australian Government guidance says an ABN, invoice or short duration does not automatically make someone a contractor. Worker classification affects possible award, employment, tax and super obligations.

Agree in writing who the client contracts with, how hygiene and quality standards work, what happens if an artist is late or ill, and who manages refunds, rework and complaints.

Common questions

When does hiring a second bridal makeup artist pay off?

When the extra paid work and scheduling benefit exceed the full labour, travel, product and administration cost with a suitable margin.

Can I just pay the second makeup artist using an ABN?

An ABN is not decisive. Review the whole relationship and relevant employment, super, tax and insurance duties.

How do I decide how many artists a bridal party needs?

Start with the required completion time and count realistic service blocks, setup and buffers, and available working space.
