Salon booking texts showing 'Unverified'? The 2026 SMS Sender ID rule explained

By Abby Waller · Founder, The Beauty Basement · @abby.brand.official on Instagram

If appointment reminders used to arrive under your business name and now show as 'Unverified', the problem may be the sender identity rather than the booking software itself.

Australia's SMS Sender ID Register has applied since 1 July 2026. Hair and beauty businesses using branded booking texts should confirm their sender ID is registered.

Abby's take

What this means for the industry — and for independents

Industry impact. Branded SMS is used for reminders, confirmations and service updates. The register turns a technical messaging setting into a client-trust issue when a legitimate business appears under an unverified label.

For freelancers. A freelancer may never have configured the sender ID because the booking platform handles delivery, so it is important to identify who sends the message and whether the branded identity is registered.

My take. The practical check is simple: send yourself the same reminder a client receives, look at the sender shown on the phone, then get the provider to confirm registration before changing a booking system that may otherwise be working.

What I'd do next

  • Send a real test booking reminder to an Australian mobile and check the sender name or number shown.
  • Ask the booking platform, telco or messaging provider whether the branded sender ID is registered and which business details were used.
  • Check relevant Australian Business Register contact details if the provider needs them for registration.
  • Retest after any provider change and keep client-facing booking information consistent with the sender clients actually see.

Watch-out. Messaging platforms and provider workflows vary. This article reflects ACMA information available by 17 September 2026 and is general business information, not telecommunications or legal advice.

What changed from 1 July 2026

ACMA says the SMS Sender ID Register took effect from 1 July 2026. Registered branded names can continue to display normally, while unregistered sender IDs appear as 'Unverified'.

Why appointment reminders can lose trust

A booking reminder often asks a client to trust a link or reply. ACMA warned that unverified messages may be ignored because customers are alert to scams.

Check the provider before rebuilding the booking flow

Make a test appointment, inspect the sender and ask the platform or messaging provider whether it uses a branded sender ID in Australia and whether that ID is registered.

Common questions

Why does my salon booking text say 'Unverified'?

If the message uses an unregistered branded sender ID, Australian rules require that identity to appear as 'Unverified' from 1 July 2026.

Do I need to register if booking texts come from a phone number?

ACMA says a phone number itself does not need registration under the SMS Sender ID Register.

How does a small salon register a sender ID?

ACMA directs businesses to the telco or messaging provider that sends their SMS or MMS.
