Some Google Search campaign settings are moving to AI Max during September 2026. Salon advertisers should audit queries, text, URLs, controls and conversion tracking now.
Abby's take
What this means for the industry — and for independents
Industry impact. The upgrade shifts more Search targeting and creative behaviour into AI Max, including search-term matching and, for automatically created assets, text customisation. That can change which queries trigger an ad and how a service business is represented before the advertiser manually edits the campaign.
For freelancers. For an independent hairdresser or salon with a small local budget, a few irrelevant clicks, an inaccurate generated claim or traffic sent to the wrong page can consume meaningful spend. The practical response is a controlled audit, not an assumption that automation will improve or ruin the campaign.
My take. I would not let an automatic platform change become an unmeasured experiment with real enquiry money. I would save the current baseline, check the exact settings Google has enabled and review lead quality as well as conversion count. A cheaper lead is not useful if it is the wrong person.
What I'd do next
- Open every active Google Search campaign and check account notifications for AI Max eligibility, upgrade status and the features now enabled.
- Export or record the pre-change settings and recent search terms, costs, conversions and qualified lead outcomes before comparing performance.
- Review generated text, final URL behaviour, brand controls, location controls and negative keywords against the services and areas actually offered.
- Monitor spend and qualified enquiries frequently after the transition, and use a controlled experiment rather than changing budgets and targeting at the same time.
Watch-out. Google Ads features, eligibility and rollout timing vary by account. Google's June update delayed Dynamic Search Ads sunset and auto-upgrade until February 2027, while automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match upgrades remain scheduled from September 2026.
Which campaigns Google says are changing now
Google's official Ads update says campaigns using automatically created assets, known as ACA, and campaign-level broad match settings continue to be auto-upgraded to AI Max starting in September 2026. Google expects eligible upgrades to conclude by the end of September and says accounts receive notifications before transition.
The Dynamic Search Ads timeline is different. Google updated the announcement on 11 June 2026 to delay the DSA sunset and auto-upgrade until February 2027. Do not treat every Search campaign as having the same deadline; check the live status and notice inside each account.
Understand what may be enabled
For campaigns using automatically created assets, Google says the upgrade enables AI Max search-term matching and text customisation by default. For campaigns using the campaign-level broad match setting, search-term matching is enabled. Other AI Max features include final URL expansion, although the mapped setup depends on the legacy feature and account.
These controls can affect query reach, ad wording and where a click lands. A salon advertiser should identify the exact enabled combination instead of reviewing AI Max as one on-or-off switch. Save screenshots or an export so later performance changes can be tied to a real setting.
Check every generated client-facing claim
Review ad text for services, prices, locations, availability, qualifications and outcomes. Website language that is acceptable as general information can become misleading when an automated ad turns it into a specific promise. Remove or correct anything the business cannot substantiate.
Check which pages supply the source material. Outdated service pages, old locations, hidden drafts or broad resource articles can create poor inputs. Fix the website first where needed, then review text customisation again rather than repeatedly patching ads around inaccurate source content.
Protect local intent and the booking path
Confirm that location controls reflect where clients can actually attend and that brand settings do not invite irrelevant competitor or information-only traffic. Review search terms and negative keywords after the change. Broad relevance is not the same as commercial relevance for a business serving appointments in a defined Perth area.
Test final URLs on mobile. A click should reach the correct service, location or booking decision rather than a generic page that makes the client search again. If final URL expansion is enabled, inspect actual landing-page reports and exclude pages that cannot support the intended conversion.
Measure qualified enquiries, not platform conversions alone
Before the upgrade, record spend, search terms, conversion actions, completed enquiry details and the number of leads that actually fit the service and location. A form submission can count as a platform conversion while still being commercially useless.
After transition, compare cost per qualified enquiry and booked client where tracking permits. Keep the review window realistic for the normal booking cycle. Do not raise budget, rewrite every landing page and change targeting simultaneously, because you will lose the ability to understand what caused the result.
Treat Google's performance claim as a benchmark, not a promise
Google reports an average seven per cent increase in conversions or conversion value at similar CPA or ROAS for non-retail advertisers using the full AI Max feature suite compared with search-term matching alone. That figure comes from Google's internal 2026 data and does not predict an individual salon account.
Small local accounts can behave differently because of limited volume, narrow geography, seasonal demand and conversion-tracking quality. Judge the upgrade against your own controlled baseline and lead quality. If the data is too thin, extend the observation window rather than drawing a confident conclusion from a handful of clicks.
A practical audit before September ends
List each active Search campaign, its upgrade status, enabled AI Max features, budget, conversion action and intended audience. Review search terms, text assets, URLs, exclusions, locations and brand controls. Test the enquiry or booking path as a client and verify that tracking records the intended action once.
Set a near-term review date and an action threshold for irrelevant spend or poor lead quality. Keep a change log. If an agency or contractor manages the account, ask for the same evidence in plain language rather than accepting that the platform will optimise itself.
Check what a booked client is worth before setting acquisition limits
Know what a qualified booking can support
Set acquisition limits from real service margin, then judge the platform change on useful enquiries and booked clients rather than headline conversions.

Common questions
Which Google Ads campaigns are auto-upgrading in September 2026?
Google says eligible Search campaigns using automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match settings are being upgraded to AI Max starting in September 2026. Check account notices because eligibility and timing vary.
Are Dynamic Search Ads also moving in September 2026?
Google's 11 June update delayed the Dynamic Search Ads sunset and auto-upgrade until February 2027. This differs from the September 2026 timing retained for automatically created assets and campaign-level broad match.
What should a salon advertiser check after the AI Max upgrade?
Check enabled features, search terms, generated text, final URLs, negative keywords, brand and location controls, conversion tracking, spend and the quality of enquiries or booked clients.
Does AI Max guarantee more salon bookings?
No. Google reports an aggregate performance result from internal data, not a guarantee for an individual account. Local demand, budget, website quality, settings and tracking can materially change the outcome.

Automatic does not mean unaccountable
Save the baseline, verify every client-facing output and measure the enquiries the business can actually serve. Platform automation still needs a commercial owner.
