Google announced Demand Gen measurement changes on 13 October 2026. Independent hairdressers should distinguish reported ad conversions from completed bookings and profit.
Abby's take
What this means for the industry — and for independents
Industry impact. Google is putting more emphasis on data quality and measurement in Demand Gen. It may change reported campaign results without automatically creating additional real-world customers.
For freelancers. Small independent hair businesses can waste scarce advertising money if platform conversions include clicks or enquiries that never become paid appointments.
My take. Reconcile campaign statistics with the actual diary and completed services. Measurement improvements are valuable only when they lead to better business decisions.
What I'd do next
- Read Google's dated update and inspect which announced features are available in your own account.
- Write down each conversion action and reconcile a sample against confirmed and completed client appointments.
- Label the date of tag changes and review client-data permissions before sharing additional information.
Watch-out. Google's performance averages are company-reported global analysis, not forecasts for Australian hairdressers; feature availability and individual results may differ.
What Google announced on 13 October
Google's October Demand Gen Drop says a Data Strength Uplift metric is launching in Google Ads. It also discusses Data Manager expansion to Analytics and Display & Video 360, with enhanced conversions coming to those tools.
Google cited average Demand Gen conversion uplift of more than 20 per cent for advertisers using its tag gateway. This is an aggregated internal finding, not a promise of 20 per cent more salon clients.
Decide which conversion is worth counting
A click, phone tap, enquiry form and confirmed booking are not the same outcome. A person can trigger several events; a booking that cancels produces no completed-service income.
Review campaign settings and compare reported conversions with client records. Measure paid new-client appointments and contribution rather than treating every contact as acquired revenue.
Understand the new metric's limitations
A stronger tracking setup can recover events that were previously missing from the dashboard. The number reported by the platform can rise even if the underlying customer demand does not.
Note when measurement settings changed and avoid comparing different conversion definitions as though they were equivalent. Use consistent reporting periods and the appointment diary to test the business outcome.
Check privacy and the mobile booking path
Google encourages first-party data connections, but do not upload a client list simply to improve a marketing score. Review necessity, permissions and the exact sharing settings with an appropriate adviser.
Open the ad destination on a phone, complete a test enquiry and confirm the resulting appointment can be found in the diary. A broken booking path cannot be repaired by more sophisticated data collection.

Google describes some features as still rolling out or launching shortly; availability can differ by account. Vendor performance claims should be checked against real bookings and local advertising economics.
Improve real bookings, not just dashboard totals

Common questions
What changed in Google's October 2026 Demand Gen update?
Google described new or expanding data connections and a Data Strength Uplift metric focused on measurement.
Does a 20 per cent uplift mean 20 per cent more hair appointments?
No. It is a Google-reported aggregate conversion measurement claim, not a guaranteed increase in paid clients.
Should a freelancer upload their booking list to Google Ads?
Not automatically. Check data necessity, consent, permissions and the sharing configuration first.
